Link Building Tips - Volume 1

Over time — as I’ve built a variety of websites and landing pages — I’ve learned a handful of link building tips.

And I’d like to share them with you on this blog.

I’m going to break them down into different volumes so they’re easier to digest — plus I need ongoing content!

Further, I’m going to focus on one-way links, meaning they link to you, but you don’t link to them.

Reciprocal links (you link to them and they link back to you) — while a number of limited, but quality links like this are helpful — one-way links is where the real SEO power is.

Ok, in volume 1 we’re going to start out with tips for one of the most popular techniques for getting one-way links: article marketing.

Article Marketing is where you write articles and then submit them to article directories.

There are two methods you can use:

1. Write an article and submit it to as many directories as possible. The idea here is to give your article as much exposure as possible so that webmasters pick it up and start posting it on their website. This helps with link popularity and traffic.

2. The second method is just submitting it to just one popular directory like Ezine Articles. The idea here is to use Ezine Article’s SEO juice and have your article rank in the search engines for whatever keyword you’re targeting in the article. This helps with traffic, but not as much with link popularity.

Here’s a trick:

If you want to use method number two above, a good thing to test is writing one super article — an article that you KNOW is good. Make sure you have the article optimized for a certain keyword, make sure the content is kick-butt and then submit it to Ezine Articles.

What will happen naturally over time is people will link to your article, helping it rank in the search engines — and webmasters will start spreading it around in the forums, putting it on their websites, and so forth. So you’ll get the exposure, the links and the search engine optimization.

It takes time to write a super article, but it can be very well worth it.

If your plan is to write a mass number of articles and submit it to as many article directories as possible, here are some general tips that will help:

  • Make sure each article targets a specific keyword. Put it in the title, and 2-3 times in the body. You can use software like Micro Niche Finder to find good keywords — or use a free tool like SEO Book’s Keyword Tool.
  • The content has to be unique — most directories require this anyway.
  • Make sure your bio box is short, compelling and links to your website. They must feel like they HAVE to click through to read more.
  • If you hate writing, try finding an article writer on iFreelance. If you find the right person, you can get good articles written for $5 dollars each.
  • Set a writing schedule and stick to it. One article per day is doable and after one year you’ll have 350 soldiers out there directing traffic to your website.

So that’s it for volume 1. I hope you enjoyed it!

I’ve also tried submitting articles to different article directories before including Ezine Articles and it really worked. My articles get a lot of traffic which also generates traffic to my site.

By the way, always see to it that your link in your author’s box is working properly…

Good point Joy - always triple check your author’s bio box. The last thing you want is to take the time to write a good article and then spell your website URL incorrectly!

You can combine your two alternatives by submitting to EzineArticles plus a whole bunch of other sites. Use a service like Contentspooling and/or Unique Article Wizard and you can fairly easily create unique versions of your articles sent to potentially hundreds of different sites. Contentspooling submits to Ezinearticles plus about 15 other high PR sites such as Articledashboard, Ideamarketers, etc.
