Two Google Adwords Power Tips

google adwordsHey guys, today is Friday so I’m gonna try to write a really helpful post for you to use over the weekend.

I’ve got two tips for you today for Google Adwords — and these are tips that I personally use in my own campaigns.

I assume many of the affiliate marketers that are reading this right now use Adwords to drive targeted traffic to their affiliate campaigns.

I definitely do and these two tips are powerful in my opinion. Let’s dive right into it.

Tip #1: Google Search Query Report.

Ok, I’ve been using Adwords for over 2 years now. Last year they introduced a new report option called Search Query Performance. For some reason I just found out about this last week!

In a nutshell, the report tells you what keywords people are using to find and click on your ads. THIS IS HUGE.

Why? Because you can use the data to develop a killer negative keyword list. If you find that your ad is being clicked on using a keyword that is not relevant, add it to your negative keyword list.

And second, the report will show you some broad match keyword phrases that you’re not directly bidding on, but are generating clicks. If you add these new keyword phrases to your campaign’s keyword list, you should pay less per click.

Here’s where you can find the Search Query Report:

Click on Reports and then “Create a New Report”.

And then click the radio button for “Search Query Performance” and indicate the timeline you want to use.

I recommend you run the report for the past 3 months the first time you run it and then once per month thereafter. Set a date like the 1st of every month and have Adwords run it automatically and then email you when the report is ready.

And the data is only helpful if you actually apply it to your campaigns. If you do, you will get better results over time.

Tip #2: Weekly Keyword Maintenance.

This is more of a suggestion than a tip, but it’s been very helpful to my campaigns so I figured I’d share it with you.

Once per day I log into my Adwords account to make sure I’m making more than I’m spending. It takes me 2 minutes.

But (and here’s the tip) once per week, I login to my account and take a look at all my keyword positioning and bids from the prior week. It takes me about 2 hours start to finish which includes making the necessary changes.

This gives me a snapshot of what I’m paying and what positioning my ads are getting. I prefer the 4-6 position slot and if you don’t keep track of your keywords, competition will skew your results, possibly knocking your ads lower down in the search results.

We’re talking about 2 hours per week for better results. It’s very well worth it.

The one thing I’m testing is using the Google Editor software to do this because it runs much quicker (you can download this under “Tools” in your account).

So these are my two Google Adwords power tips. I hope you enjoyed them. I’ll definitely add more tips as I come across them so please subscribe to my RSS Feed if you’re interested in sticking with me.

And I welcome all comments so please give me your opinion on what I wrote (good or bad) and your experience. I respond to every comment.

Have a good weekend!

Great article. I am a Google adwords user and it is good to get these suggestions. I know that I have been lax in maintining my adwords.

My goal is to boost up my organic search so that I don’t send so much to Google each month.

It is good to sharpen your saw once per week.

Hi Richard, I send Google a lot of money every month too so I know what you mean! SEO…good links are key which I’m sure you already know.

Cheers,
Ryan

All I can truly say is that you are a brave man for using Adwords in the first place.

Every time I tried to get started, a slap came along and this decided me, that I would have to use other means of gaining traffic.

Kudos to you and all others who use it.

Hi AnneMarie, I don’t know what your landing pages look like so I can’t give you good advice, but make sure your ad groups contain very closely-related keywords and make sure those keywords and variations of them are on your landing page, especially your title tag…and throw in a H1 tag at the top with your main keyword phrase if possible.

So basically you should have one landing page per ad group so you can customize the landing page to the keywords you’re bidding on.

Cheers,
Ryan
