Sales Are Back to Normal and Here’s Why

Four days ago I wrote a post about how the past 2 weeks, my affiliate biz has been slowing down. What was scary was that my ad clicks were staying the same, just not as many sales.

I send thousands of dollars to Google every month and when the favor isn’t returned, it’s quite scary!

Well, things seem to be back to normal ($850 in the past 3 days with $250 ad spend) so I want to share with you how I did it SO YOU CAN DO IT TOO.

First Thing

The day after I made the above post, I checked into Crazy Egg to see if I can further optimize my landing pages for a higher click thru rate. I made some changes based on the data and sales jumped up.

The basic version of Crazy Egg is free. You’re crazy if you’re not using it, no pun intended.

Second Thing

I went thru the 15 active campaigns I have in Google Adwords and dwindled it down to 10. The other 5 weren’t going anywhere, and I just don’t feel like putting any more effort into them. Plus, they were polluting my account’s overall CTR which is bad.

I’m not sure exactly what this did for sales, but my account’s performance is better now, I seem to be getting more impressions and it’s just easier for me to manage 10 campaigns instead of 15.

Third Thing

I had 3 campaigns that were superstars for me in a past life. I chalked up their decline to increased competition and the products just losing popularity…until I learned how important it is to have multiple adwords accounts when you have a lot of campaigns running, testing, etc. Reason being, the performance of your campaigns is very reliant on your account’s history.

For the longest time, I just used 1 account…so all the good campaigns were mixed in with the bad ones. The better way to do it is to have 1 account for your winners and a couple of campaigns for your tests. And another account for content network campaigns if you have any.

Once I moved these 3 previous winners into their own account, sales started rolling in again. It’s not like it used to be, but it’s only been 2 days.

You can manage multiple accounts using Google’s My Client Center.

I think that’s pretty much it. I’m in the process of taking Crazy Egg to a new level by playing around with Google’s Website Optimizer. It allows you to test multiple variations of a page to see which combo has the highest click thru rate.

I’ll post about it soon once I know more about it.

AS ALWAYS, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE THAT HAS A QUESTION OR WANTS TO SHARE A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AND WHAT THEY LEARNED.

I DON’T GET TOO MANY COMMENTS ON THIS BLOG, BUT I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE READING…BUT CHIME IN EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE. LET’S MAKE THIS BLOG AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION!

:-)

Cheers,
Ryan

You reminded me of the importance of cleaning out campaigns. I tend to start several projects and lose track of all of them, which doesn’t wind up profitable. Thanks for letting us know about Crazy Egg, too.

Hey Stacey, yes cleaning out the crappy campaigns is important. It will increase the overall quality of your account, which Google Adwords takes into consideration when determining things like minimum CPC.

Hey Ryan,

Great post about something many affiliates rarely think about. I think keeping your business clean and organized (in every way) tends to make you more successful.

It’s amazing the mental boost you get when you clear out all the crap…the stuff that just isn’t working.
