Google Adwords’ New Matching Feature
Google Adwords just introduced a new beta matching featuring that enables you to get more clicks from the keywords in your account.
It’s called “Automatic Matching” and it can be found under Campaign Settings –> Advanced Options.

In a nutshell, Google will take a look at your keywords and show your ads for other keywords they feel are relevant.

They were already doing this on some of the broad match keywords in your account, but I guess it’s now an official feature you can opt in or out of.
My experience with Google showing my ads for other relevant keywords has been so so. Using the search query report once per month, I noticed that a lot of the additional keywords they were showing my ads for were wayyyyyy off — so I added them as a negative keywords.
So for this new beta feature, I’m going to keep it turned off until I read some feedback on how it’s working out.
I feel it really takes the control away from you because it’s impossible for Google to get it right all the time — so you’re wasting money on useless clicks.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

Ryan

Hey Ryan, it’s nice to drop by your blog and have a read, I’m gonna bookmark it for later.. as for the above post.. I just cannot see how Google can make this work..
Without checking with us on every keyword they choose, it would be impossible for them to know if another keyword is actually worthwhile to us as marketer’s. They may choose a relevant keyword for that particular market, but will it be a converting keyword?… great thoughts and link there Ran ,thankyou.

Thanks for stopping by Jamie. And I agree with you completely. Google is a powerhouse, but how can they produce other relevant keywords with close to 100% accuracy? Based on what I’ve seen within my own account, I wasn’t that impressed.
But then again, maybe I’m wrong…maybe this new matching program is different…and if anyone has any direct experience with it, I’d love for them to comment on this post.
Anyone?
Cheers,
Ryan
Hi Ryan
Isn’t this just diluting the money you spend? It would seem to me the feature is worse than advertising without negative keywords. The whole idea with Google ad words is to maximise your returns for the money you spend so I don’t think I will be trying this new feature.
Thanks for bringing it up though.
I agree with you Van Girl. I have it turned off as well. Well, actually I have one small campaign running in Adwords that isn’t getting much traffic…so I turned Automatic Matching on to see what it does. I’ll blog about my results.
Cheers,
Ryan
