Direct Linking is NOT Dead

Direct linking (also referred to as the Google Cash method) is where you use pay per click advertising to drive targeted traffic to an affiliate program. But instead of sending them to a landing page that presells, you send them directly to the merchant’s website.

There was a time when this method worked VERY well. But like anything, affiliates caught on, competition increased and now it’s a lot harder — but it can still be profitable as I’ll prove to you here.

For most of my affiliate life I’ve sent targeted PPC traffic to preselling landing pages.

Well, I started experimenting with direct linking campaigns using Google Adwords and Clickbank because my Wealthy Affiliate membership has a tool that shows me which Clickbank products are hot.

So I started setting up quick campaigns using real small adgroups and laser-focused keywords. Keywords such as the product name, “buying” keywords and longtail keywords — this is important especially when using Google Adwords because of their strict quality score measurement.

Here are my rough stats:

I ran a report in my Clickbank account for the past 60 days and about 17% of items sold over this time period were from direct linking campaigns.

  • Total commissions for my direct linking campaigns equaled $1,800.
  • PPC expenses to make this $1,800 equaled $400.
  • So profit equaled $1,400.

I also spent another $100 on direct linking campaigns that resulted in zero sales. Overall, not too bad considering I spent practically no time on the campaigns other than the initial set up.

What you need is a tool that shows you the momentum of various affiliate programs — most affiliate networks have this to some extent.

Clickbank, for example, has the gravity number which gives you a general idea of how many affiliates are making money — the tool I mentioned above gives me the gravity fluctuation so I can see if a certain product is starting to sell like crazy.

Here’s what I plan on doing moving forward — and maybe this will give you ideas for your own campaigns:

I’m going to continue to throw up small direct linking campaigns for the products that are selling — I’ll then create a presell landing page for the ones that are profitable for me.

My line of thinking is, if the product is profitable using direct linking, it SHOULD be an even bigger success using a landing page.

After all, landing pages (when done right) are your best bet — they’re just a bigger pain to get set up!

Talk to you soon,
Ryan

Hi Steve, I agree with you.

The earnings above were mainly from 4 products.

So I’m in the process of creating landing pages for these 4 products to hopefully increase revenue.

I guess I could expand on the keyword list as well.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hello!

Hi Joy, direct linking is a good way to test the waters before jumping in feet first. In the end though, you definitely want to have your own website.

Hey Ryan, I am one-tenth your size, so it’s inspiring to see what I could be one day.

We’ve been experimenting with affiliate marketing campaigns on the search engines. We did up our numbers to date for our Feb Cashflow report.

We’ve made $1064 in commissions, but we’ve spent $1327 in PPC advertising cost, so we’re still in the hole for about $263. (Mind you, that includes some silly mistakes we made early on when we were just hoping that the ad clicks would convert into commissions - after all, it’s a 60 day cookie. There’s always a chance!)

Anyways, we’ve been able to fine tune a campaign to bring in coffee change, but we’re giving some other things ago. Had a question about direct linking.

Is setting up a domain name to redirect to an affiliate link the same as direct linking? Some advertisers state that you can’t direct link in their terms and conditions. But if your ad sends them to your domain name which automatically sends them to the advertiser’s site… is this a way around it, or is it a no-no as well? Or, perhaps, put in another way, if it says no direct linking, can we infer that you need to create a landing page that requires a click to go on to the advertiser’s site?

Appreciate your insight.

Hey WebDiggin, thanks for stopping by.

The important thing is you’re making money…that shows you know how to generate commissions…now you have to work on fine tuning your existing promotions so you spend less and more more, and take a swing at new campaigns.

In regards to direct linking…setting up a domain for direct linking that redirects to the merchant’s website is usually done to avoid Google Adwords’ rule that you can’t have two domains promoting the same affiliate program.

But if the merchant doesn’t allow direct linking, then you have to set up a landing page that directs the visitor to the merchant’s site.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ah. Thanks for the insight (and the speedy response). I wasn’t going to reply with a comment with my next piddly question, but your automated email response prompted me to do so (to eventually reach the 3 comment no-follow tag removal)

If I set up a page that shows a coupon for the advertiser and opens up the advertiser’s site in an i-frame, is that generally considered shady practice? (Don’t worry, I’m asking the advertiser the same questions, but I just wanted to hear as a general rule what affiliate marketers thought about redirects and iframes)

Cheers.

By the way, what plugin are you using to send an automated email when someone comments? I also searched your blog, but couldn’t find the name of the plugin that lets you turn off the no-follow after 3 comments. They both seem like great plug-ins.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

Hey WebDiggin, to be honest, I don’t have any experience with i-frames so I can’t give you feedback.

But the coupon idea sounds good. The only problem is, your landing page needs some good content or otherwise Google Adwords quality score will slap you with a high CPC minimum. So mix in content with the coupon.

Plugins:

Comment Relish for the automated thank you.
NoFollow Free for the No Follow tag removal.

Cheers,
Ryan

Thanks for the tip on how to lower my CPC minimum. You’ve given me a lot to test out for the next little bit. Appreciate it and I’ve signed up for your email feed - which is another thing I’ll have to look at because the company you’re with offers different features than Feedburner.

Cheers
